Notes

  • -  Carbon-copy, unbound typescript discussing the influence Samuel Strauss exerted on Bernays's life through the essay "Things are in the Saddle," published in the November 1924 issue of the Atlantic Monthly. Bernays's discussion of the Strauss essay suggests that Strauss's critique of 1920s consumerism had roots in the writings of the nineteenth-century American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson. The essay title "Things Are in the Saddle" is from an ode by Emerson. Bernays's typescript is undated, although this version probably dates to 1961-62, like other drafts of material that was eventually condensed as part of Bernays's memoir, The Biography of an Idea (1965). Reproduced as facsimile page images: 4 pages.
