Notes

  • -  Offprint of a debate published in Forum Magazine, March 1929. Everett Dean Martin argues that the propagandist tricks and manipulates the public like a puppet master and Edward L. Bernays replies that minorities, as well as majorities, can employ the techniques of propaganda, and thereby gain a weapon against intolerance and tyranny. Martin's arraignment includes an attack on the merchandising of politics and religion, as well as on the way products are advertised. He charges that "political opinion can be manufactured like brick and delivered to anyone who can pay the cost," and that religion "often makes use of high-powered salesmanship, thus putting itself on the same spiritual level with toothpaste and commodities advertised to prevent 'halitosis.'" Bernays insists that truth seeking and propaganda need not be incompatible, and that propaganda, or the mass promotion of ideas, is necessary to change society in beneficial ways.
