Biographies Cecilia Bustamante (Peru-USA) (1930 – 2006)

Cecilia Bustamante was born in Peru in 1930. She is the author of nine poetry books, including Discernimiento, 1971-1979 (Discernment, 1971-1979)(1980), Nuevos poemas y audiencia (New Poems and Audience) (1965), and El nombre de las cosas (The Name of Things) (1970). She also worked as journalist and is known to be the first female editorial writer in Peru for the newspaper La Tribuna. Later on she edited Extramares, an international multidisciplinary and multilingual literary journal. Her honors include Peru’s National Poetry Prize, the National Book Award. In Austin, Texas, she was granted the Special Award for Contributions to Latino Arts, and the Austin Hispanic Writers Award. Once in the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Peru appointed her Honorary Cultural Attaché of Peru to Mexico and the United States. She also represented the National Institute of Culture of Peru abroad. Bustamante taught at the University of Texas at Austin. She died in 2006.

Cecilia Bustamante nació en Perú en 1930. Es la autora de nueve libros de poesía, entre ellos Discernimiento, 1971-1979 (1980); Nuevos Poemas y Audiencia (1965), y El nombre de las cosas (1970). Además de ser poeta, fue periodista. Adicionalmente a su carrera como escritora, trabajó también como periodista y escribió sobre arte, literatura y teatro. Fue la primera mujer que realizó trabajo periodístico en periódicos de Perú tales como La Tribuna. Entre sus honores se incluyen: el Premio Nacional, el Premio Nacional de Poesía (Perú), el Premio Especial para contribuciones a las Artes Latinas de la Liga de Artistas Chicanos, y el Austin Hispanic Writers Award. Sirvió como editora de la revista literaria Extramares. Al trasladarse a los Estados Unidos, el Ministerio de relaciones exteriores de Perú la designó como Agregada Cultural Honoraria de Perú a México y los Estados Unidos. También la nombró representante del Instituto Cultural Nacional de Perú. Bustamente impartió cursos en la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Murió en 2006.
