Biographies Leopoldo Zea (Mexico) 1912-2004

Philosopher Leopoldo Zea was born in Mexico City in 1912. He is the author of over 50 books on Latin American thought, including The Latin American Mind (1949), The Role of the Americas in History (1957), and Simón Bolívar (1980). Apart from coordinating numerous academic publications, he was the editor of the Mexican journal Cuadernos Americanos. His honors include the ‘Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes de México’, the Gabriela Mistral Prize, and the Civil Order of Alfonso X, the Wise of Spain.  Zea has also taught as a philosophy professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and at El Colegio de México, and as intellectual ambassador, he has participated in various government seminars, conferences and expositions in Europe and Latin America. He has lectured in many universities throughout and has received honorary degrees from universities in France, Chile and Russia, among others. Zea died in Mexico City in 2004.

El filósofo Leopoldo Zea nació en México, D.F. en 1912. Fue autor de más de 50 libros sobre el pensamiento y la historia de América Latina, entre ellos Dos etapas del pensamiento en Hispanoamérica (1949), América en la historia (1957) y Simón Bolívar (1980). Sirivió como editor de la revista mexicana Cuadernos Americanos. Dentro del gran número de galardones y honores recibidos por Zea, cabe destacar el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes de México, la Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio, y el Premio Gabriela Mistral.  Fue profesor de filosofía en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y en el Colegio de México, y como figura intelectual pública, participó en varios seminarios, simposios y exposiciones en Europa y en América Latina. Dio cátedras en varias universidades y recibió doctorados honoríficos de universidades en Francia, en Chile y en Rusia, entre otros. Murió en México, D.F. en el 2004.
