Biographies Josefina Plá (Paraguay) (1909-1999)

Josefina Plá was born in the Canary Islands in 1909. Though born in Spain, critics identify her body of work with Paraguay. She both contributed greatly to the latter country’s cultural development and resided there for the greater part of her life. She is the author of several poetry and short-story collections, as well as plays and essay volumes; over fifty book-length publications in total. El precio de los sueños (The Price of Dreams) (1934), La muralla robada (The Stolen Wall) (1989), Fiesta en el río (Party in the River) (1977), and Apuntes para una historia de la cultura paraguaya (1967) are respectively noteworthy representations of her feats in each genre. Plá was awarded an honorary degree from the Paraguayan National University, anointed a member of the Royal Spanish Academy and Dame of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In addition to her literary contributions, the hundreds of articles she published in international newspapers perpetuated her influence as a cultural critic and journalist. She died in her adoptive home Asunción, Paraguay in 1999.

Josefina Plá nació en las Islas Canarias en 1909. Aunque nació en España, su obra se identifica con Paraguay, país en el que residió la mayor parte de su vida y donde aportó enormemente al desarrollo cultural. Plá es autora de más de cincuenta libros, de los cuales se destacan sus poemarios  y sus libros de cuentos, así como obras de teatro y volúmenes ensayísticos. Sus obras más conocidas son El precio de los sueños (1934), La muralla robada (1989)  y Fiesta en el río (1977). Plá recibió varios títulos honorarios, entre ellos el de la Universidad Nacional Paraguaya. También fue nombrada Miembro Correspondiente de la Real Academia Española y Dama de la Orden de Isabel la Católica. Además de su aporte literario, su trayectoria como escritora incluye un gran número de artículos en periódicos internacionales, los cuales cimentaron su influencia como periodista y crítica cultural. Josefina Plá murió en Asunción, Paraguay, en 1999.
