Gabriela Mistral

Gabriela Mistral was the pseudonym of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. She was born in Vicuña, Chile in 1889. She is the author of over twelve books of poetry, including Desolación (Desolation) (1922), Ternura (Tenderness) (1924), and Tala (Felling) (1938). Mistral was the first Hispanic writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The publication of her first poetry collection, in 1922, coincided with her relocation to Mexico where she assisted the Education Secretary in the reorganization of their rural education program. In 1925 she was appointed Chile’s cultural representative to the League of Nations, a position she held until she was named consul for life in 1935. As a diplomat she travelled to California, Mexico, Italy, and Cuba, before establishing a residence in New York. In addition, she served as Chilean delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women until her death in 1957.

Mistral fue la primera escritora Hispanoamericana en recibir el Premio Nobel de Literatura. La publicación de su primera colección de poesía en 1922 coincidió con su traslado a México, donde asistió en la reorganización del programa educativo rural a invitación del Secretario de Educación. En 1925 fue nombrada representante cultural de Chile en la Liga de las Naciones, puesto que mantuvo hasta que fue nombrada cónsul en 1935. Como cónsul, viajó a California, México, Italia, y Cuba, antes de establecer su residencia en Nueva York. Fue también delegada de Chile en la Asamblea de las Naciones Unidas para la Condición Social de la Mujer. Mistral murió en 1957.
