Biography Jimmy Santiago Baca

Jimmy Santiago Baca was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1952. An American writer with an Apache-Chicano identity, he is  the author of six books of poetry, including Immigrants in Our Own Land (1979), Healing Earthquakes (2001), C-Train and 13 Mexicans (2002), as well as the author of the memoir:  A Place to Stand (2001). He also wrote several books of essays, novels, and a screenplay, Bound by Honor (1993). Baca’s most recent novel is A Glass of Water (2009). After being convicted of drug charges in 1973, he spent six years in prison, where he taught himself how to read and began writing poetry. His honors include the Vogelstein Foundation Award, the American Book Award for Poetry (Martin and Meditations on the South Valley), the Pushcart Prize, and the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature. His screenplay Bound by Honor was released by Hollywood Pictures in 1993 as a movie titled Blood In Blood Out. In 2004 he started a non-profit organization, Cedar Tree, which supports and provides these workshops for youth, prisoners, ex-prisoners, and disadvantaged communities across the nation, and he currently conducts writing workshops with children and adults of varying age and experience levels in prisons, libraries, schools, and universities from coast to coast.

Considerado poeta y escritor Americano con descendencia Apache-Chicana, es autor de seis colecciones de poesía, entre ellas Immigrants in Our Own Land (1979), Healing Earthquakes (2001), C-Train and 13 Mexicans (2002), una obra autobiográfica, A Place to Stand (2001), así como también ensayos, novelas, y una obra de Teatro: Bound by Honor (1993). Su novela más reciente es A Glass of Water (2009). A raíz de una adolescencia difícil, Baca sirvió una condena en la cárcel, y fue ahí donde aprendió a leer, a escribir, y a escribir poesía.
