Joaquín Edwards Bello was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1887. He wrote about thirty books, including El inútil (The Useless One) (1910), El roto (The Broken) (1920), and La chica del Crillón (The Girl of the Hotel Crillón) (1935). Among his awards are the Atenea Award, Marcial Martínez Award, National Prize for Journalism, the Chilean National Prize, and he was declared Illustrious Son of Valparaíso. Edwards served as president of the PEN Club. He died in Santiago, Chile in 1968.

Entre sus galardones se inluyen el Premio Atenea, el Premio Marcial Martínez, el Premio Nacional de Periodismo, el Premio Nacional de Chile, y también fue declarado Hijo Ilustre de Valparaíso. Edwards se desempeñó como presidente del PEN Club. Murió en Santiago de Chile en 1968.
