Carlos Maggi was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1922. Although he’s mostly known as one of the most prominent playwrights of Uruguay’s Generación del 45 (Generation of 45), he also wrote a number of short story collections and books of essays. His most important plays include, La trastienda (The Back Room) (1958), La noche de los ángeles inciertos (The Night of the Uncertain Angels) (1960), and La Gran viuda (The Great Widow) (1961). His essay collections, Gardel, Onetti y algo más (Gardel, Onetti and More) (1964), and Artigas y su hijo el Caciquillo (Artigas and His Son the Cacique) (1992) garnered acclaim for addressing cultural criticism with an accessible prose. Maggi was awarded the Uruguayan Critics Award six times, the Florencio Sánchez Award, and the International Festival of Brussels’ Grand Prix for La raya amarilla (The Yellow Line), a short film he wrote and directed. In addition to his literary contributions, he studied law and held various governmental positions. He died in Las Toscas in 2015.

Maggi recibió seis veces el Premio de la Crítica de Uruguay, el Premio Florencio Sánchez, y el Grand Prix del Festival Internacional de Bruselas por La raya amarilla, un cortometraje que él mismo escribió y dirigió. Paralelamente a su trayectoria creativa, estudió derecho y ocupó varios puestos gubernamentales. Fue nombrado asesor legal del Banco Central de Montevideo y Director del Servicio Oficial de Difusión Radio Eléctrica (SODRE). Murió en Las Toscas en 2015.
