Nicolás Huet Bautista is a Tsotsil writer from Huixtan, Chiapas. His work draws on Tsotsil symbolism, but he considers its principles to be universal to every pueblo and ethnicity. Every culture faces an internal struggle between good and bad, between tragedy and success. His stories emphasize the importance of being guided by a respect for nature’s wisdom. For Huet Bautista, writing in Tsotsil is a chance to express a distinct worldview, collection of knowledge, and values system. His narrative, “Ti slajebal lajele—La última muerte,” has been published by the organization Escritores en Lenguas Indígenas. He is a founding member of ELIAC, Escritores en Lenguas Indígenas, a national association of Mexican Indigenous Writers.
