January 28, 2000 International Symposium on Democracy and the Rule of Law

Four U.S. Supreme Court Justices will be among the participants at an international symposium titled "Democracy and the Rule of Law in a Changing World Order" at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., March 7-9 with a closing session at the New York University School of Law March 10. The symposium, which will attract participants from all over the world, is free and open to the public.

Judges, legislators, legal scholars, and experts in various fields from 21 countries will analyze democracy and the rule of law with regard to the following topics: the state and human rights; corporate power and the global economy; national sovereignty; the roles of women; responsible and fair use of natural resources; religion and governance; and multiethnic and multiracial states.

Sessions take place in the Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium in the Jefferson Building March 7 and 8 from 9 a.m to 6:30 p.m. and in the Library's Mumford Room in the Madison Building on March 9 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The symposium moves to the New York University School of Law's Vanderbilt Hall on March 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
