April 13, 2000 Press Preview of Two Bicentennial Exhibitions at the Library of Congress

WHAT:
Preview of two exhibitions celebrating the Library's Bicentennial, "Thomas Jefferson" and "The Wizard of Oz: An American Fairy Tale." Curators and exhibition directors will be on hand to guide members of the press through the exhibitions and to answer questions. Visit one, have some lunch, view the other.

WHERE:
Both exhibitions are located in the Thomas Jefferson Building. Come to Room LJ 119 on the first floor of the building. Enter through the west front ground entrance of the building, located at 10 First Street S.E.

WHEN:
Thursday, April 20, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The reconstitution of Thomas Jefferson's personal library of 6,487 books, which he sold to Congress in 1814; first time ever on public display
• Thomas Jefferson's "original Rough draught" of the Declaration of Independence
• The original handwritten copyright application for L. Frank Baum's classic children's story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900
• A pair of the ruby slippers that Dorothy (Judy Garland) wore in the 1939 movie, "The Wizard of Oz"
