Journalist and author William H. MacLeish, the youngest son of poet, writer, and former Librarian of Congress (1939-1944) Archibald MacLeish, will discuss his memoir Uphill with Archie: A Son's Journey (Simon & Schuster, 2001) at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 24, in Room 119, Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E. (NOTE: The date and time of this event has been changed from its original date of March 8.) The program is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The event, part of the Center for the Book's "Books & Beyond" author series, is sponsored by the center and the Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Division.

Publishers Weekly called Uphill with Archie a "loving and generous" portrait and a "frank though dignified reckoning by the courageous son of a faded American icon." Poet and critic Richard Wilbur praised it as "a complex and admirable piece of remembering."

William MacLeish is the author of The Day Before America: Changing the Nature of the Continent (Houghton Mifflin, 1994), The Gulf Stream: Encounters with the Blue God (Houghton Mifflin, 1989), and Oil and Water: The Struggle for Georges Bank (Atlantic Monthly Press, 1985).

The Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Division provides reference and collection development services in the Local History and Genealogy, Microform, and Main reading rooms, and sponsors lectures in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

The Center for the Book was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries. For information about its programs, publications, and the activities of affiliated centers in 41 states and the District of Columbia, visit its Web site at https://www.loc.gov/cfbook.
