January 24, 2002 Newly Restored Classic "Cinderella" To Be Shown at the Library of Congress

The Mary Pickford Theater celebrates its namesake with the screening of a beautifully color tinted print of the 1914 version of "Cinderella" on Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. Pianist Ray Brubacher will provide musical accompaniment. The Pickford Theater is located on the third floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E. The program will be hosted by Keith Lawrence, a partner in Los Angeles-based Timeline Films. He has produced more than 60 documentaries and three feature films, and has directed The DeMille Dynasty for AMC, two episodes of Forever Wild for PBS, and the acclaimed documentary "Mary Pickford--A Star." He is also Chief Financial Officer and Secretary of the Mary Pickford Foundation. Mr. Lawrence will discuss Pickford's career, her considerable impact on film history, and the work of her Foundation.

"Cinderella" is an effective treatment of the classic fairy tale, with Mary Pickford in the title role and her husband Owen Moore as Prince Charming. Directed by James Kirkwood, the film was long considered lost until a 35mm nitrate print was discovered in the Netherlands Film Museum. The film was repatriated to the United States, and subsequently preserved by the Library of Congress Motion Picture Conservation Center in Dayton, Ohio. This preservation includes both the original color tints and the Dutch intertitles inserted when "Cinderella" was distributed in the Netherlands.
