October 9, 2002 Luminary Lectures @ Your Library Series to be Offered at the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress' Public Services Collections Directorate is announcing the new fall schedule for the "Luminary Lectures @ Your Library" lecture series. The lectures are free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

"This new lecture series gives Library staff members and their local colleagues the opportunity to gain a fresh perspective on current issues in librarianship and learn more about innovative work being done in the library field throughout the country," said Diane Kresh, director for the Library's Public Service Collections.

The fall lecture series will begin on Friday, Oct. 25, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the Pickford Theater, third floor of the James Madison Building at 101 Independence Ave. S.E. in Washington, D.C. Irene McDermott, a reference librarian and systems manager at the San Marino Public Library and author of "The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide," will discuss "Surviving the Internet: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference Desk."

Brewster Kahle, director and co-founder of the Internet Archive (www.archive.org) will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the Pickford Theater on the topic of "Public Access to Digital Materials."

"'No Guts, No Glory': Information Professionals March Into the 22nd Century" will be the topic of a Dec. 4 teleconference featuring Barbara Quint, editor-in-chief of Searcher: The Magazine for Database Professionals. The teleconference will be held 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the Digital Library Learning Center, first floor atrium of the James Madison Building.

On Monday, Dec. 9, 10:30 a.m.-12:00 in the Pickford Theater, Toni Carbo will discuss "Information Ethics: Challenges for Librarians and Information Scientists." Carbo is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Madison Council Fellow in Library and Information Center in the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.

The Luminary Lectures series at the Library of Congress is part of a national, public education initiative called @ your library™, the Campaign for America's Libraries, which is sponsored by the American Library Association. The Library of Congress, along with libraries in all 50 states, is participating in this multiyear campaign designed to showcase public, school, academic and special libraries nationwide and to remind the public that libraries are dynamic, modern community centers for learning, information and entertainment.
