Project Will Put Children's Literature Online

The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) will make its debut during a ceremony in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C., on Nov. 20 at 5:30- 7:30 p.m. The press is invited to attend. The ICDL is a Web site project ( that will make freely available online more than 200 children's books from around the world.

The Library of Congress is contributing digitized versions of 50 books from its Rare Book and Special Collections Division and general collections. All books are in the public domain.

The International Children's Digital Library is a project of the University of Maryland and the Internet Archive. The Library of Congress and the American Library Association are ICDL partners. The project is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Kahle/Austin Foundation, Adobe Systems Inc. and the Markle Foundation.

The goal of the ICDL is to make available worldwide a comprehensive library of international children's literature. When the collection debuts, it will contain materials donated from 27 cultures in 15 languages. The Web site will grow as more contributions of digitized children's books are made.

"In its Rare Book and Special Collections, the Library of Congress holds one of the largest and best collections of American children's literature," said Mark Dimunation, chief of the Library's Rare Book and Special Collections Division. "Dating from the early 18th century to the present, these 8,000 volumes include a very broad representation of the works of such authors as Louisa May Alcott, Horatio Alger Jr. and Harriet Mulford Stone Lothrop (Five Little Peppers series). We are delighted to share these more widely as part of the Library's continuing electronic educational outreach."
