WHAT:

"Veterans History Project: Salute to Women"

On the occasion of Women's History Month, the Veterans History Project will host an Open House that is free and open to the public and will include:

• Display and explanation of materials submitted by and on behalf of women who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars and of women who served in support of the war effort
• Audio and video clips from the collection
• A tour of the Veterans History Project Web site and tips on interviewing techniques

Monday, March 24, noon to 1 p.m.

WHERE:

Mumford Room, sixth floor of the Madison Building of the Library of Congress, 101 Independence Avenue S.E.

BACKGROUND

The Veterans History Project, coordinated by the Library of Congress through its American Folklife Center, calls for Americans to play a personal role in preserving the nation's history by collecting the first-person accounts of those who served America during wartime. The Library is archiving audio- and video-recorded oral histories along with documentary materials (such as photos, diaries and letters) from veterans as well as from civilians who served in support of the war effort.

More than 600 organizations-including the Society of American Archivists, American Library Association, American Association of State and Local History, Disabled American Veterans, American Folklore Society, American Red Cross, American War Mothers, Daughters of the American Revolution, WAVES National, Women's Overseas Service League, and Women Veterans Historical Project-are participating in the project. AARP is the founding corporate sponsor.
