April 20, 2003 Center For The Book's Photo Exhibition Showcased at the Library of Congress

Twenty-one award winning photographs, depicting citizens of all ages using libraries, are on display from Monday, April 14 through Wednesday, May 14 in the Library of Congress' Center for the Book, Room 650, Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave., S.E., in Washington, D.C. The center is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The colorful photographs, taken by professional and amateur photographers, were the winners in the 1999 "Beyond Words: Celebrating America's Libraries" photography contest sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Library of Congress with underwriting from Ingram Library Services, Inc. The traveling exhibition, sponsored by the ALA and the Center for the Book, opened during the ALA Midwinter meeting in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 12, 2001. By the time the tour ends in 2003, it will have traveled to 60 cities and will have been showcased in 60 public and academic libraries across the nation. This is its only appearance in Washington, D.C.

These photos capture the magic of libraries and the many ways they touch our lives," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. "They remind us how libraries make a difference in their communities and offer opportunities to every individual."
