February 9, 2004 Celtic Roots: Stories, Songs and Traditions from Across the Sea

The Library of Congress will present “Celtic Roots: Stories, Songs and Traditions from Across the Sea,” a live performance that explores traditional Irish culture and immigration, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, March 4, in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.

The 45-minute program will be followed by a question-and-answer period with the event’s performers and Library of Congress specialists. This event is free and open to the public. Groups and educational audiences of 10 or more must make reservations by calling (202) 707-1071 or (202) 707-3303.

This Library of Congress LIVE! event presents the powerful stories of Irish immigrants who arrived in America in the 1880s and explores how their traditions continue to contribute to the multitextured fabric of American culture. “Celtic Roots” is a lively, interactive program featuring music, dance, storytelling and a Mummer's play. In collaboration with the theater group the Washington Revels, “Celtic Roots” features traditional performers Steve Hickman, Myron Bretholz, James Houton, Oran Sandel and Charlie Pilzer. Historical film footage, letters, diaries, photographs and maps from the Library's collections provide context for the performance.

“Celtic Roots” is part of a year-round series of programs produced by the Library of Congress that enhances local school curricula and aims to inspire lifelong learning.
