July 26, 2005 Exhibition, "The Cultures & History of the Americas," Extended Through Sept. 24

Originally scheduled to close on July 23, “The Cultures & History of the Americas,” which highlights some of the treasures of the Jay I. Kislak Collection at the Library of Congress, has been extended through Saturday, Sept. 24.

“The Cultures & History of the Americas” is on view Monday-Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the North Gallery of the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E. The closest Metrorail stop is Capitol South on the Blue and Orange lines.

To acquaint visitors and scholarly audiences with the Kislak Collection—which focuses on the history of the early Americas, from the indigenous peoples of Mexico through the period of European contact, exploration and settlement—the highlights exhibition presents some 50 artifacts that introduce the themes of the larger collection.

Two interactive video kiosks enhance the exhibit experience by allowing visitors to simulate turning the pages of a 17th century book and manipulate a small, seventh century Maya wooden box covered with carved glyphs. Both of the original items are on display in the exhibition.
