“Churchill and the Great Republic,” an online Library of Congress exhibition, earned a Silver MUSE award from the American Association of Museums.
Produced with Terra Incognita Productions, the online presentation received the award “in recognition of the highest standards of excellence in the use of media and technology for interpretation and education in history and culture.”
Upon presenting the awards, the judges noted, “This is one of the best Web sites we have seen in a long time. The elegant and professional manner in which it is presented is outstanding. From the look-and-feel, the content, the method of delivery and the navigation, this Web site stands well above many in existence today.”
The online “Churchill” presentation is based on a Library exhibition of the same title, which was on display at the Library from Feb. 5 through July 10, 2004. The exhibition explored the life and career of Sir Winston Spencer Churchill and emphasized his lifelong links with the United States. It featured more than 200 items covering Churchill’s youth, his heroism during the Boer War, his marriage to Clementine Hozier, his service in the trenches of World War I, his leadership of Great Britain, his relations with the United States during World War II and his last years as a private citizen.
The expanded online version of the Churchill exhibition, which is accessible at www.loc.gov/exhibits/churchill/, allows users to see complete versions of the letters and documents displayed in the physical exhibition and to explore the presentation through an interactive timeline and audio commentary by curator Daun van Ee.
In addition to receiving the MUSE award, the “Churchill” Web site has been recognized for excellence by USA Today Hot Sites, the Communication Arts Site of the Week, the Macromedia Site of the Day, and the SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive Festival.
“Churchill and the Great Republic” is among more than 60 exhibitions available on the Library’s Web site at www.loc.gov/exhibits. This site comprises virtual representations of exhibitions that have been on view in the Library’s buildings on Capitol Hill.
