August 29, 2006 Four Poets, Reading Poems on "Ancient History," to Open Poetry at Noon Series on Oct. 10

Four poets, reading poems on "Ancient History," will open the fall 2006 Poetry at Noon series on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Mary Pickford Theater on the third floor of the James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.

The Poetry at Noon series will continue in the Mary Pickford Theater on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The events, sponsored by the Library's Office of Scholarly Programs, are free and open to the public; no tickets or reservations are required.

The featured poets on Oct. 10 are Michael Davis of Arlington, Va., Larry Johnson of Raleigh, N.C., John O'Dell of Annapolis, Md., and Kay Lindsay of Hyattsville, Md. Their poetry selections will deal with ancient Greece and Rome, slavery in early America, Native American artifacts and the Big Bang theory.

Davis is the author of "Upon Waking." Johnson teaches poetry at Louisburg College in Louisburg, N.C. O'Dell is the author of "Painting at Night," and Lindsay wrote "Dancing on the Dirt."

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, the Poetry at Noon series will feature "Delicious Poems About Food." The poets are Carly Sachs and Marcela Sulak of Washington, D.C. and Bernadette Geyer of Arlington.

Sachs, who teaches creative writing at George Washington University, is the author of "the steam sequence." Sulak, an assistant professor of literature at American University, is the translator of "May" by Czech poet Karel Hynek Macha. Geyer, who serves on the editorial board of The Word Works, a poetry publisher in Washington, D.C., is the author of "What Remains."

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the theme will be "Florida Poets Arrive," featuring three Florida poets: Roselyn (Rize) Y. Cole of St. Augustine, and Kay Day and Dorothy K. Fletcher, both of Jacksonville. Cole is the author of "Spirit Voices Rizing." Day is the author of "A Poetry Break," and Fletcher wrote "Zen Fishing and Other Southern Pleasures."
