March 18, 2007 Law Library of Congress and Tufts University To Present Mock Congressional Oversight Committee Hearing on March 22

WHAT: The Law Library of Congress and Tufts University will present a Mock Congressional Oversight Committee Hearing. The theme is “Inherent Presidential Powers and the Constitution: National Security, Personal Liberty and the Matter of National Security Agency Eavesdropping.”

WHEN: Thursday, March 22, 2007, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.; reception to follow

WHO: Students from Tufts University, the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Military Academy will play the role of senators and witnesses in the debate. The hearing will be led by Louis Fisher, constitutional law expert and senior special assistant to the Law Librarian of Congress.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, the Law Library of Congress and Tufts University inaugurated the Mock Committee Hearings, a cooperative activity in which the Law Library facilitates the opportunity for students from Tufts Institute of Global Leadership and other institutions to participate in an educational program designed to challenge the students’ understanding of topical legal issues and congressional procedure.
