A previously issued media advisory stated that Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was to accept the 1507 Waldseemüller World Map on behalf of the American people from German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a ceremony at the Library of Congress on Monday, April 30. However, the Speaker will be unable to attend due to the California funeral for the late U.S. Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald. The official who will receive the map on behalf of the American people is not confirmed at this time. The Federal Republic of Germany, represented by Merkel, will officially transfer the 1507 world map by Martin Waldseemüller, known as “America’s Birth Certificate,” to the Library of Congress at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 30, in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building. The map is the first document on which the name “America” appears. The press will have a rare opportunity to view the map, which will be on display for the ceremony. In December 2007, the map will be placed on permanent exhibition in a state-of-the-art encasement at the Library of Congress.
