WHAT: Historian and librarian John Y. Cole, director of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, will be honored at a research forum sponsored by the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association. The program, titled “Washington, D.C., the Nation and the World: Papers in Honor of John Y. Cole,” will feature four papers reflecting different aspects of Cole’s writings, his contributions to library history and his 41-year career at the Library. WHEN: Sunday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m. Open to invited guests and members of the press. WHERE: Washington Convention Center, Room 147B, 801 Mount Vernon Place, N.W., Washington, D.C. WHO: Maurvene D. Williams, program officer at the Center for the Book, will present a short historical overview of the center, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, and discuss trends in the development of the 51 state centers for the book. Jane Aikin, director of the Division of Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities and co-editor, with Cole, of the “Encyclopedia of the Library of Congress” (2004), will discuss the historiography of the Library, highlighting some of Cole’s contributions. Donald G. Davis Jr., professor emeritus of library history at the University of Texas at Austin and editor emeritus of “Libraries & Culture: A Journal of Library History,” will speak on international trends and issues in library history. Jonathan Rose, professor in the Department of History at Drew University in New Jersey, will present a brief overview of trends in book history.
