Four calendars and three sets of Knowledge Cards featuring the wide-ranging collections of the Library of Congress have been released for 2009. Produced cooperatively by the Library and its publishing partners Pomegranate Communications and Universe/Rizzoli, these products draw on the Library’s collections to illustrate the history of film and theater, women’s achievements and Japanese textiles. CALENDARS Movie Posters 2009: Celebrating the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress and the Library’s eclectic film and film-poster collections, this colorful wall calendar features 12 stunning posters highlighting films dating from the 1930s to the 1980s that have been selected for the registry. (Universe/Rizzoli, $13.99) On Broadway 2009: Broadway show posters have become prime cultural artifacts, and the Library holds some fascinating and colorful examples of this theatrical art form. This wall calendar features brilliant reproductions of original posters celebrating a dozen classic comedies, dramas and musicals that have lit up the New York stage from the 1950s to the 1970s. (Pomegranate, $13.99) Women Who Dare 2009: A popular continuing title, this desk calendar features 53 women—both groundbreaking historical figures and brilliant contemporary achievers—who have made profound contributions in a wide range of endeavors, from art, education and politics to sports and science. (Pomegranate, $14.99) Japanese Designs 2009: This charming “postcard” calendar presents 26 beautiful designs for kimonos and textiles drawn from works held by the Asian Division and in the Fine Prints Collection of the Prints and Photographs Division. This petite and easily portable desk engagement calendar has an additional benefit – each image is detachable for use as a postcard. (Pomegranate, $12.99) KNOWLEDGE CARDS The Library and Pomegranate Communications have added three new decks to the array of more than two dozen sets of Knowledge Cards—with titles ranging from the American Revolutionary War and Civil Rights to Sports Quips and Quotes and Great Lines from Great Movies. Each deck includes 48 information-packed cards, often in a quiz format. At a cost of $9.95 each, the new releases include: Who Was She: A Quiz Deck of Notable Women in Science by Aimee Hess highlights women (from 2640 B.C. to the present) who defied convention, disregarded roadblocks and ignored gender bias to follow their passions. Royal Women: Queens, Consorts, and Concubines - A Quiz Deck by Linda Osborne provides a captivating historical outline of royal women through the centuries.
