May 20, 2010 (REVISED June 4, 2010) Library's Packard Campus Announces June Film Series

Movie fans of Alfred Hitchcock and Hayley Mills will have a treat this month because several of their films will be showcased in the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation’s June film series in Culpeper, Va. Starting June 3, this month’s screenings will also include cinematic notables such as Kim Novak, James Stewart, Maureen O’ Hara, William Powell, Myrna Loy, Maureen O’Sullivan and Eli Wallach.

Titles from the Library of Congress National Film Registry are also in the lineup. Films named to the registry have been selected for preservation because they are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant. Programs are preceded by an informative slide presentation about the film, with music selected by the Library’s Recorded Sound Section. Some screenings will also include short subjects before the main feature. Titles are subject to change without notice.

All Packard Campus programs are free and open to the public. “Vertigo” (Paramount, 1958)
In this crime mystery, a San Francisco detective, suffering from acrophobia, investigates the strange activities of a friend's wife while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. Named to the National Film Registry in 1989, the film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. “Vertigo” stars James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes.

Friday, June 4, 7:30 p.m.

“Purple Noon” (Plein soleil) (Times Film, 1960)
Tom Ripley is a talented mimic, moocher, forger and all-around criminal improviser; but there is more to him than even he can guess. This French crime thriller, with English subtitles, was directed by René Clément. “Purple Noon’ stars Alain Delon, Maurice Ronet and Marie Laforêt.

“The Parent Trap” (Walt Disney Productions, 1961)*CANCELED*
Hayley Mills plays twins who, unknown to their divorced parents, meet at a summer camp. This family comedy was directed by David Swift and stars Hayley Mills, Maureen O'Hara, Brian Keith and Charles Ruggles.

“Tiger Bay” (Independent Artists, 1959)
In this crime drama, a 12-year-old tomboy witnesses the murder of a woman by her merchant-marine boyfriend, but bonds with him and thwarts the police in their investigation. Directed by J. Lee Thompson, “Tiger Bay” star Hayley Mills, John Mills and Horst Buchholz.

“Saboteur” (Universal Pictures, 1942)
Aircraft factory worker Barry Kane goes on the run across the United States when he is wrongly accused of starting a fire that killed his best friend. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this mystery thriller stars Priscilla Lane, Robert Cummings, Otto Kruger and Norman Lloyd.

Saturday, June 12, 7:30 p.m.

“Sullivan’s Travels” (Paramount, 1941)
In this adventure comedy, a director of escapist films goes on the road as a hobo to learn about life, and experiences a rude awakening. Directed by Preston Sturges, the film was named to the National Film Registry in 1990. “Sullivan’s Travels” stars Joel McCrea, Veronica Lake, William Demarest and Franklin Pangborn.

“The Thin Man” (MGM, 1934)
Former detective Nick Charles and his rich, playful wife Nora solve a murder case in this romantic comedy-mystery. Directed by W.S. Van Dyke, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1997. “The Thin Man” stars William Powell, Myrna Loy and Maureen O'Sullivan.

“Whistle Down the Wind” (Allied Film, 1961)
Little Kathy discovers a man wanted for murder hiding in her family's barn, who claims that he is Jesus Christ. Starring Hayley Mills, Bernard Lee and Alan Bates, the film was directed by Bryan Forbes.

“Blackmail” (British International Pictures, 1929)
In this silent crime thriller, the daughter of a shopkeeper in 1920s London goes out with her detective-boyfriend, but later keeps a secret rendezvous with another man. Live musical accompaniment will be performed by Andrew Simpson. “Blackmail” was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Anny Ondra, Sara Allgood, Charles Paton and John Longden.

“Frenzy” (Universal, 1972)
A serial killer is murdering London women with a necktie. Although the police have a suspect, he is the wrong man. This crime thriller was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Jon Finch, Barry Foster and Barbara Leigh-Hunt.

“Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (United Artists, 1974, R-rated*)
An American bartender and his prostitute girlfriend go on a road trip through the Mexican underworld to collect a $1 million bounty on the head of a dead gigolo. This crime thriller was directed by Sam Peckinpah and stars Warren Oates, Isela Vega, Robert Webber, Gig Young and Kris Kristofferson.

“The Moon-Spinners” (Walt Disney Productions, 1964)
When Nikki Ferris and her aunt take a trip to a small Greek island, they never expect to get involved in jewel theft and murder. A strangely reluctant innkeeper, a handsome Englishmen, a missing boy and a mysterious yacht all play a part in this family mystery/romance, based on a Mary Stewart novel. Directed by James Neilson, the film stars Hayley Mills, Eli Wallach, Peter McEnery and Pola Negri.
