January 4, 2011 Queens Library and Frick Art Reference Library Are New Cataloging Partners

The Library of Congress welcomes Queens Library in Queens, N.Y., and Frick Art Reference Library in New York, N.Y., as new cataloging partners in the Electronic Cataloging in Publication (ECIP) program. The new partnerships, effective since November 2010, will take the program in several new directions. The Queens Library is the first public library to become an ECIP cataloging partner and the first library to focus solely on cataloging juvenile fiction. Frick Art Reference Library is the first art library to join the program and will catalog titles published by the Frick Collection. In addition, two longtime partners—Brigham Young University and Northwestern University—have broadened the subject scope of their ECIP cataloging. Brigham Young, a Mormon institution, is making sure it catalogs all titles related to Mormons and Mormonism, effective July 2010. Northwestern, which collects broadly in Africana materials, has begun cataloging Africana studies, effective Oct. 25, 2010. Cataloging in Publication (CIP) is a national program with the mission of providing catalog records in advance of publication as a service to the nation’s libraries. It was developed at the Library of Congress in 1971 following several pilot programs. The Electronic Cataloging in Publication program was fully developed in 2003. With the new and enhanced partnerships, the CIP program is continuing to further its goal to foster a more subject-based approach to the ECIP partnership program.
