October 4, 2016 Andrea Pinkney to Deliver Anne Scott MacLeod Lecture on Children's Literature

Award-winning children’s author Andrea Davis Pinkney will deliver the 2016 Anne Scott MacLeod Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Montpelier Room, located on the sixth floor of the Library of Congress James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C. A reception will follow beginning at 8 p.m. The event, hosted by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and its Young Readers Center, is free and open to the public; no tickets are required. The event will be held in collaboration with the University of Maryland College of Information Studies.

Pinkney received the Coretta Scott King Award in 2013 for “Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America,” and she is a vice president for Scholastic Trade Books. Pinkney has written more than 20 books and has also received the Medgar Evers College Lifetime Achievement Award, among many others.

Established in 1999 by the University of Maryland College of Information Science, the MacLeod lecture honors the work and passion of Anne Scott MacLeod, a noted authority on children’s literature and a faculty member emerita of the University of Maryland. The MacLeod lecture is devoted to introducing scholarly issues associated with children’s literature to a broad audience.

The Library’s Center for the Book, established by Congress in 1977 to "stimulate public interest in books and reading," is a national force for reading and literacy promotion. A public-private partnership, it sponsors educational programs that reach readers of all ages through its affiliated state centers, collaborations with nonprofit reading promotion partners and through the Library’s Young Readers Center and its Poetry and Literature Center.
