Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden will host a conversation with world-renowned music, television and film producer Emilio Estefan on Monday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Library of Congress Coolidge Auditorium in the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C.

The conversation is being presented as part of the Library’s 2019 initiative Explore America’s Changemakers. You can follow and join in on the #Changemakers conversation via Twitter.

Emilio and his wife acclaimed singer, songwriter and actress Gloria Estefan will receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song on Wednesday, March 13. The honorees represent two historic firsts for the prize – the first time it has been awarded to a married couple or to musicians-songwriters of Hispanic descent.

Estefan will discuss his experience as a music mogul, his success in entrepreneurship and the art of cultivating talent.

The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required and are available through this event-ticketing site: EstefanLOC.eventbrite.com.

About Emilio Estefan
A 19-time GRAMMY Award winner, Emilio Estefan is a musician, songwriter, record and television producer, best-selling author, filmmaker and cultural ambassador. He has shaped and directed the careers of many musical talents, including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Jon Secada, Jennifer López and many others. He was one of the founding leaders of the Latin Grammy Awards, inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame and named the first “Person of the Year” by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.  Estefan was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame presented him with its lifetime achievement award. Emilio became the first Cuban-American to become a minority share-holder in an NFL franchise, joining the ownership of the Miami Dolphins in 2009. He was selected as the second vice chair to the Commission for the National Museum of the American Latino by President Barack Obama. President George W. Bush also appointed him as a member of the President’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities.

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song honors living musical artists whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with George and Ira Gershwin, by promoting the genre of song as a vehicle of cultural understanding; entertaining and informing audiences; and inspiring new generations of musicians.

In making the selection for the prize, the Librarian of Congress consulted leading members of the music and entertainment communities, as well as curators from the Library’s Music Division, American Folklife Center and Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division.
