January 28, 1997 Civil War Historian To Speak at Library of Congress on February 27

"New Perspectives on Civil War Military Leadership" is the topic of a presentation at the Library of Congress at noon, Thursday, Feb. 27, by historian Thomas B. Buell, the author of The Warrior Generals: Combat Leadership in the Civil War (Crown, 1997). Sponsored by the Center for the Book and open to the public, Mr. Buell's talk will take place in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building. It is part of the center's "Books & Beyond" series, which features authors of recent books that have a particular relevance to the Library's programs or collections.

"This is the first author we've featured who has drawn on the Library's remarkable resources for the study of the Civil War," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. "In this particular book Mr. Buell examines the nature of military leadership by studying six generals--three pairs from North and South who met in battle--to assess their abilities as generals."

Thomas B. Buell is writer-in-residence at the University of North Carolina and the author of biographies of Admirals Ernest King and Raymond Spruance. A former wartime commander, he has taught military history at the Naval War College and at West Point.

The Center for the Book was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading, and libraries. Its programs are supported primarily by private contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
