February 6, 1997 Library of Congress Hosts Roundtable Discussion with Well-Known Chilean Writers

Three prominent Chilean writers -- Isabel Allende, Ariel Dorfman and Antonio Skarmeta -- will hold a roundtable discussion of their works at the Library of Congress on Thursday, Feb. 27.

Isabel Allende, a prolific Chilean writer who resides in the United States, is the author of more than four dozen books in various editions, among these Paula and The House of the Spirits, which also became a motion picture.

Ariel Dorfman is the author of more than 48 works in various editions, among these Death and the Maiden, which was a successful Broadway play and film. Mr. Dorfman spends part of his time in Chile and the rest in the United States at Duke University, where he is professor of literature.

The third author, Antonio Skarmeta, who resides in Chile, is best known for his novel The Postman, which became the award-winning movie "Il Postino."

Georgette Dorn, chief of the Hispanic Division, will moderate the roundtable discussion, which begins at 10 a.m., in the Mary Pickford Theater, third floor of the Madison Building of the Library of Congress.
