April 11, 1999 Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones to Give $1 Million to Library of Congress

Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, will announce a gift of $1 million to the Library of Congress to support a project to rebuild the personal library of Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. in the Librarian's Office of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. SE.

Dr. James Billington, the Librarian of Congress, will announce the start of a worldwide search to replace the volumes that were destroyed by a fire in the U.S. Capitol on Christmas eve, 1851. The Library plans to rebuild the missing portion of Thomas Jefferson personal library of 6,487 volumes as one of its projects to celebrate the Bicentennial of the Library in the year 2000.
