A press preview of the exhibition "The Work of Charles and Ray Eames: A Legacy of Invention" will be held in room LJ 119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., on Monday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Speakers will include Irene Chambers, director, Interpretive Programs Office; Alexander Von Vegesack, director of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany; and members of the Eames family.
This exhibition, which is the first posthumous retrospective of the work of this influential husband-and-wife design team, will include more than 500 items drawn from three major sources: photographs, drawings, and documents from the Library's collection of more than 1 million items donated by Ray Eames in 1988; furniture from the collections of the Vitra Design Museum; and personal items on temporary loan from Lucia Eames, daughter of Charles, and from the Eameses' Office, which continues today under the direction of Charles's grandson, Eames Demetrios.
