Notes

  • -  Mrs. Todd started making quilts for her family to use when she was 25. She teaches quiltmaking and makes quilts to sell through a local shop to supplement her income. Geraldine Johnson described her as "a bubbly, enthusiastic person who would be a natural à interpreter of Blue Ridge quilts." This interview includes good information on the economics and practice of making quilts to sell, criteria for selection of materials to use in quilts, and how quiltmaking has changed over time.
  • -  Transcription: GJ: Would you quilt the crazy quilts? / ZT: Well, a lot of times I would. And a lot of times I'd tack 'em. But if I tacked 'em, I tacked 'em real close, because I don't care for a tacked quilt. Well, it just don't, it just don't last as long. You just don't, if you laundry it, it, it just don't hold up as good. A quilted quilt will really hold up, and I think it's as good an investment as anybody could put their money in, is a real good quilted quilt. Because if you take care of it, it, I don't know how long it'd last you. I'll say fifty years or more. Maybe more than that. Because all that sewing you put in it, the more sewing you put in it the better it is.
