Notes

  • -  Although Geraldine Johnson's notes indicate that this interview was cut short due to Mrs. Shockley's need to leave to take care of her mother, they nonetheless covered a lot of useful information within the limited time. Mrs. Shockley learned to quilt as a child, has made numerous quilts for her family, and sells quilt tops at a flea market. She talks a lot about her mother and has her mother's collection of quilt blocks. (Although not addressed in the interview, these blocks probably served as a reference collection, to remind the maker how the block goes together.) This interview is particularly interesting because of the amount of detail on the activities of an earlier quilting generation and because of Mrs. ShockleyÆs poignant comments about her realization that quilts are her motherÆs legacy.
  • -  Transcription: MS: I would honestly I think that she has pieced I would like to know the number thousands and quilted. She quilted for everybody in the neighborhood, and our family was a large family you know, and a large amount, number of nieces and nephews she had, and I guess each one of them, she has pieced and given a quilt to. So, I've just, we talked one day not too long ago, she was still remembering you know about her quilts and we talked about em, and I said I wish we had an account of all you've ever made. And of course, every year, for I'd say, she had seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and I believe she had fourteen, no she had four great-grandchildren I guess is all at that time. But now she has fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and she has pieced and given all of them quilts at Christmas for I'd say ten or twelve years, up until about six years ago.
