  • -  Selecting much of the literature from other magazines, Horace Greeley founded the New-Yorker. Two editions of the Whiggish paper were circulated. One was a folio which began in 1834 and the second was a quarto edition begun in 1836. Greeley was assisted for a time by R. Griswold, Park Benjamin, and Henry Ware. In the last weekly issue, September 11, 1841, the subscribers were advised that the New-Yorker would be replaced by the New York Weekly Tribune. Since the Tribune was to be a Whig political paper, subscribers could choose between it, the New World which was another literary weekly, or have their money refunded. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
