About Delaware Gazette and Peninsula Advertiser (Wilmington, Del.) 1814-1820

The Delaware Gazette began publication in Wilmington on April 19, 1814. Founded by Moses Bradford, the newspaper was published on both Wednesday and Saturday. Beginning with the November 10, 1814 issue, its title was lengthened to the Delaware Gazette and Peninsula Advertiser. With the January 1, 1817 issue, ownership of the newspaper passed to William Miller, who served as printer and publisher until 1820.

The Delaware Gazette and Peninsula Advertiser included agricultural information, notices of land for sale, and the sale of patented plows. In addition, it reprinted articles from foreign newspapers printed in cities such as Rome, Paris, and London. The Advertiser also included church notices, ads for apprentices, notices of saw mills for sale, debts on estates, farms and businesses for rent, as well as rewards for runaway slaves and servants. It also published marriage notices and title of books for sale.

The Advertiser covered national news. On May 24, 1817, it reprinted a speech by Connecticut Governor Oliver Wolcott. In addition, it reported on Indian uprisings around the country: “Of the settled and inveterate hostility of the Florida Indians against the citizens of this state; there is daily confirmation.” Additionally, the paper included information related to the internal navigation lottery of the state of Pennsylvania.

In 1820, Samuel Harker acquired the Delaware Gazette and Peninsula Advertiser. Beginning on February 23, 1820, he published the paper under the shortened title Delaware Gazette and began a new series of numbering.
