About Monmouth Herald & Inquirer (Freehold, N.J.) 1860-1865
The Monmouth Herald & Inquirer began in April of 1860 when the Monmouth Weekly Herald combined with the Monmouth Inquirer to form the Monmouth Herald & Inquirer under the ownership of W. D. and J. P. Connolly. For the next four years, there were various changes in ownership, but in 1864, Benjamin Snyder & Son sold the newspaper to Colonel Edwin F. Applegate, who remained owner and manager until his death in 1885.
Monmouth County is located in the eastern central portion of New Jersey and has shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean. By 1860, the county had a population of 39,000 people and was an agricultural center with manufacturing towns. The coming of the railways in 1850 allowed for resort communities to develop on the coast and enabled farmers to send their produce to market in northern New Jersey and New York City. Freehold had become the county seat in 1715 and became home to the county courthouse, sheriff’s office, prison, and post office.
The paper was published weekly on Thursdays and had a masthead banner of the New Jersey state seal showing Liberty and Ceres along with the phrase, “Devoted to Literature, Politics, Agriculture and General Intelligence.” The first page typically offered the reader articles of a general, educational, and amusing nature with page two being reserved for legal, political, and editorial matters. Pages three and four were largely advertisements. The paper was strongly Republican, and through its series of owners and editors, always supported the Union cause and was vehemently anti-slavery. The issue published after the assassination of President Lincoln contained black boarders around all its columns and pages.
On March 23, 1865, ownership passed to Edwin Forrest Applegate. In his first editorial, Applegate spoke of the difficulties of making a living running a newspaper and commented on the frequent change of hands that the paper had undergone, “A fresh change may cause some to reflect on the frequency of such events in the office. It is sufficient to say that no business is more frequently undertaken by those who know nothing about It, than printing and publishing; and that in no business does a man have a better opportunity to discover his own presumption and folly.” He also reiterates the support that the paper will offer the Union cause, “As far as the paper is concerned, it is his purpose to make it constantly stand for the UNION. It wants the friendship of those who go for maintaining our national existence, whatever the cost and sacrifice.”
Applegate came from a publishing and printing family. His father William Applegate made a livelihood doing theatrical and book printing along with press work for several large New York newspapers. Edwin F. Applegate succeeded to the family business after his father’s death in 1847 and continued it until around 1857 when he left to take a series of editorship roles at various newspapers. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 29th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, being commissioned on September 12, 1862. He held command of the unit during the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then resigned on January 16, 1863.
Applegate changed the name of the newspaper to The Monmouth Inquirer in June of 1865.
