About Mirror of the Times & General Advertiser (Wilmington, Del.) 1799-1806

The Mirror of the Times and General Advertiser was first published in Wilmington, Delaware, on November 20, 1799. Printed at the Franklin Press every Wednesday and Saturday by James Wilson, it was housed on Market Street. The newspaper was published with the masthead statement, “With friendly hand we hold the glass, To all promiscuous as they pass; Should folly here her likeness view; We fret not that the Mirror’s true; If the fantastic form offend, We make it not, but would amend.”

The Mirror of the Times and General Advertiser cost readers $4 per year and included largely national news. Many of the news items were reprints of acts, speeches, and reports presented to the U.S. Congress. For example, on February 25, 1804, Wilson reprinted the entire text of an act providing for military appropriations, specifically to support an Indian department that would maintain fortifications and arsenals. The issue also published a debate in the Senate on an amendment to the Constitution, a notice of proposals to supply rations to the War Department, and a legislative report dated February 18, 1804, “erecting Louisiana into two territories and making provisions for the temporary government thereof.”

In the same issue, the Mirror of the Times and General Advertiser reprinted an act passed in New Jersey for the gradual abolition of slavery as well as a report on the West Indian Islands, noting the positions of whites, slaves, and mulattoes/free blacks following the independence of Santo Domingo.

The Mirror of the Times and General Advertiser remained in print through August 22, 1806.
