About The Delaware Register, Or, Farmers', Manufacturers' & Mechanics' Advocate (Wilmington, Del.) 1828-1829
The Delaware Register, or Farmers’, Manufacturers’ and Mechanics’ Advocate was first published in Wilmington, Delaware, on November 1, 1828. Published every Saturday by A. and H. Wilson, the newspaper cost $2 per year and stated on its masthead, “Our Public Journals as they ought to be- ‘The Vehicles of Intelligence, not the common sewers of Scandal’.” The first issue stated that the Delaware Register would contain a variety of original and selected articles. The editors noted that they would “present their patrons with an impartial and authentic record of the most important domestic and foreign occurrences” and that they did not intend to intervene in party politics but rather “to give our readers intelligence.”
The paper’s inaugural issue also observed that “considerable attention will be paid to the Literary Department.” In fact, the Delaware Register regularly included both fiction and poetry.
The Delaware Register also covered “Foreign Intelligence,” with brief news divided by country, including developments in Spain, England, and Portugal. The paper also reported on the devastation resulting from the recent uprising in Greece. Finally, the Delaware Register published articles related to national, state, and local news, including a description of the origins of the U.S. banking system and reprints of President John Quincy Adams’ message to Congress delivered on December 2, 1828, as well as legislation establishing free schools in Delaware.
The Delaware Register, or Farmers’ Manufacturers’ and Mechanics’ Advocate ceased publication with its last issue on October 24, 1829.
