About The Browning Review (Browning, Mont.) 1915-1925

The Browning Review dates to 1915, but the earliest existing issue is from June 23, 1922, with Harry K. Osborn serving as publisher. The masthead at that time touted the paper as “the first and only newspaper published on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.” The Review covered a range of topics, from Browning community news and news about Glacier County to stories about oil and agricultural development, as well as state and federal politics. The paper to a lesser extent reported on issues related to the Blackfeet Nation, with most stories focusing on the area’s Indian Agency, federal Indian policies, and reservation lands available to non-tribal settlement.

Osborn sold the Review to new ownership on July 1, 1924. Dan Whetstone, the editor and publisher of the Cut Bank Pioneer Press, became the new publisher, and C. M. Brinton stepped in as printer and manager, bringing his newspaper experience from North Dakota to Montana. In the paper’s July 4, 1924, editorial they enthusiastically laid out their plans to readers, writing that “the Review will do all possible to interpret the spirit and progress of western Glacner [sic] county and hopes to be a factor in the newer and larger development [sic] that as surely as tomorrow is coming to this part of Montana.”

This new vision for Browning and the Browning Review did not last long. A brief story in the January 2, 1925, issue explained that “present business is insufficient to pay expenses, but it was decided to continue for a time in order to give local businesspeople and citizens a further opportunity to award their hometown paper sufficient patronage upon which to make both ends meet.” The story added that “it is for them to say by their patronage whether the paper can continue to exist or not.” The Review folded soon after, publishing its last issue on February 27, 1925. Following the dissolution of the paper, Brinton moved to Washington, and Whetstone kept publishing the Cut Bank Pioneer Press until his death in 1966.
