About Casper Daily Tribune (Casper, Wyo.) 1916-1931

J.E. Hanway began publishing the Casper Daily Tribune in 1916 after purchasing The Natrona Tribune, which had been publishing in Casper, Wyoming since 1891. Hanway continued to publish the Natrona Tribune weekly while publishing the Daily Tribune every day except Sunday. Within a few years, the Daily Tribune was the most circulated newspaper in the state of Wyoming. The Daily Tribune was also the only paper in the state at the time that was a member of both the Associated Press and the United Press.

As Casper was a city founded on oil, the Daily Tribune dedicated a section to Wyoming oil business, including information on fields, prices, and company stocks. The Daily Tribune also covered farming and ranching operations in and around Casper, as well as in the state. Plays and movies were advertised heavily in the Daily Tribune, often including a synopsis and a list of performers. Some issues included articles about fashion trends, and tips for housekeeping and homemaking. The paper also focused on global news, specifically developments of the first World War. Serialized books and short stories were printed in every issue, including pieces written by soldiers and veterans that gave readers a look into the trenches.

In 1925, the Tribune Company purchased The Casper Herald, a morning publication, and combined it with the Daily Tribune into the Casper Tribune-Herald in 1931. In 1955, the company also purchased the Casper Morning Star, which had been publishing since 1949. Wyoming Publishers Incorporated bought both papers in 1961. Wyoming Publishers circulated the daily newspaper as the Casper Tribune once again, and published a Sunday edition under the name the Casper Star-Tribune. In 1972, Wyoming Publishers Incorporated was taken over by Howard Publications, which continued to publish the paper as the Casper Star-Tribune. Lee Enterprises purchased the Star-Tribune from Howard Publications in 2002 and is the current owner and publisher. The Star-Tribune still has the highest circulation of any paper in the state, with a daily distribution of about 23,760 in eastern and central Wyoming according to Lee Enterprises. The Star-Tribune was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1985 and is hailed as Wyoming’s state-wide newspaper.
