About Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial (Wilmington, Del.) 1878-1928

The first issue of Wilmington Daily Commercial was published on October 1, 1866, and was the first daily newspaper published in Delaware. Wilmer Atkinson and Howard Jenkins arrived in Wilmington specifically to found a daily newspaper and established their headquarters near city hall. In 1871, Wilmington Daily Commercial faced competition from William T. Croasdale, a former city editor of the newspaper. Croasdale had founded Every Evening in that same year, publishing the first issue on September 4, 1871, and this publication soon became the leading newspaper in the state. This new challenge placed significant pressure on Atkinson and Jenkins. On March 31, 1877, Wilmington Daily Commercial published its last issue before merging with Every Evening to form Every Evening and Commercial. Every Evening and Commercial was published from April 2, 1877 to March 30 1878. With the April 1, 1878 issue, the paper was renamed Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial.

Housed in an office on the southwest corner of Fifth and Market Streets in Wilmington, the newspaper expanded to an eight-column folio and cost two cents. In 1882, Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial relocated to Fifth and Shipley Streets where a four-story building was specifically adapted for newspaper production.

In 1883, the Every Evening Publishing Company purchased the Daily Gazette and its weekly issue, the Delaware Gazette. From 1883 until 1902, a weekly edition called the Delaware Gazette and State Journal was also published. Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial continued until July 14, 1928 when it was absorbed by Every Evening.

After many title changes and mergers, Every Evening, Wilmington Daily Commercial eventually became the News Journal, which is currently Delaware’s only major daily newspaper.
