About Der Sonntagsbote Und Der Seebote (Milwaukee, Wis.) 1912-1922

The Sonntagsbote and the succeeding Sonntagsbote und der Seebote were Sunday newspapers from Milwaukee, WI. The first edition of the Sonntagsbote was published on March 22, 1906 by the publishers of the weekly the Seebote, which had been in existence since 1875. It was soon renamed the Seebote und Sonntagsbote and then continued to be published until 1922 as the Seebote und der Sonntagsbote. According to the editor’s note in the first issue, the Sonntagsbote was the Sunday edition of the weekly newspaper readers had wished for and replaced the regular Friday issue.

Large numbers of German immigrants had started settling in Milwaukee in the 1840s. The Sonntagsbote was one of the 19 German-language newspapers catering to the city’s German-speaking immigrant communities at the time. It featured news from Germany and other European countries but national news in a section titled “Aus der neuen Welt” (from the New World). In politics, it leaned Democratic.

Between 1906 and 1912, the title of the newspaper varied. It was printed as the Sonntagsbote, Seebote und der Sonntagsbote, Wisconsin Banner und Volksfreund und der Sonntagsbote, and Sonntagsbote und Wisconsin Banner und Volksfreund before it became Der Sonntagsbote und der Seebote in 1912. Editor Joseph C. Hoffmann discontinued the Sunday paper in September 1922 in an effort to lower the price for its readers. Subscribers continued to receive the Seebote on Saturdays and, in addition to that, the Catholic weekly Columbia on Wednesdays, and a semi-monthly agricultural publication National Farmer.
