About The Sussex Countian and Laurel Gazette (Laurel, Del.) 189?-19??
The Sussex Countian and Laurel Gazette was founded sometime in the 1890s in Laurel, Delaware. It was a continuation of the Sussex Countian established in the 1880s by the Sussex Countian Publishing Company. Published by C. W. Kenney, the Gazette claimed to be “The Organ of Independent Democracy” William Jennings Bryan’s famous saying, “You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold,” was printed in both corners of the front page.
In fact, the October 24, 1896 edition of the paper was staunchly supportive of Bryan’s candidacy for president against Republican William McKinley. The Gazette published an extended article debating the gold versus silver standard that was dominating national politics at the time. A Democratic paper, the Sussex Countian and Laurel Gazette advocated for restoring the silver standard and urged voters to elect Bryan.
The paper also endorsed candidates for Delaware state and local elections, for example, Ebe Tunnell for governor in the 1896 election as well as Democratic nominees for such positions as coroner, sheriff, county treasurer, and inspectors. The paper also covered miscellaneous local happenings and state and peninsular news, reporting on Democratic meetings across the state and providing farming and agricultural information.
It is unknown when the Sussex Countian and Laurel Gazette ceased publication.
