About Wilmington Lokal-Anzeiger Und Wilmington Freie Presse (Wilmington, Del.) 19??-19??
Founded in 1880, the Wilmington Lokal-Anzeiger und Wilmington Freie Presse (“Wilmington Local Gazette and Wilmington Free Press”) was established in Wilmington, Delaware. Edited by William Schnetter and published by Max Goetz, the German-language newspaper had a circulation of 1,000.
The Wilmington Lokal-Anzeiger und Wilmington Freie Presse consisted largely of articles of local interest including a column called “Short Reports from the City.” The column from the May 16, 1914 issue included information on a school graduation ceremony, the founding of Fairview Fire Company, the 61st anniversary celebration of the Delaware’s German choir or Sängerbund, and the travel to Wilmington by a couple from Germany. Also of note was a column entitled “Reports on Organizations” it included information on the 40th anniversary celebration of the Delaware Lodge No. 349 of the German Order of Harugari, as well as a scheduled rehearsal of the Sängerbund and notes on its business meetings.
The Wilmington Lokal-Anzeiger und Wilmington Freie Presse also included brief news from Germany, including an extensive article on Emperor Wilhelm’s visit to Austria in early 1914 and a description of the palace where he was hosted. In addition, there appeared an article on the 400th anniversary of the founding of the lace industry in Saxony’s Erzgebirge.
The newspaper also contained an extensive section on advertisements, such as a performance by the Sängerbund at the New Century Club and various theatrical performances, along with ads for car dealerships, piano lessons, dentists, matchmaking services, breweries, banks, and health remedies.
It is unclear when the Wilmington Lokal-Anzeiger und Wilmington Freie Presse ceased publication, but it was most likely sometime in 1918. The newspaper is listed in Ayer’s 1918 directory but is not in the 1919 edition.
