About The Union Republican (Georgetown, Del.) 189?-19??

The Union Republican was founded in Georgetown, Delaware, in 1898 and was published by the Union Republican Publishing Company. The newspaper promoted the cause of Delaware’s Union Republican Party established as a result of a schism in the Republican Party. Divisions over the acceptance of John Edward Addicks as a Republican candidate for state senate in the election of 1896 prompted the state party to split into the Union Republican and the Regular Republican factions. The Union Republicans were strongest in Kent and Sussex counties, while the Regular Republicans dominated New Castle County. This split was not fully healed until the 1930s.

The Union Republican had a decidedly pronounced political emphasis. For instance, the October 21, 1904 edition of the newspaper includes lists of Republican candidates for all state offices, in addition to lists of Union Republican and Prohibition Party candidates. In order to encourage familiarity with the voting process, the edition also included detailed instructions for voting and a demonstration version of the official ballot to be used in Sussex County.

By November 1904, George E. M. Tengle was listed as editor and manager, and the Union Republican printed the official vote of Sussex County in the election of that year. In addition, the newspaper published a list of the licenses issued by the Clerk of the Peace from October 1, 1903 until October 1, 1904. The list includes merchant, veterinary, dentist, physician, and photographer licenses as well as licenses for businesses related to real estate, auctioneers, peddlers, taverns, and stallions. It is unknown when the Union Republican ceased publication, although it is listed as still being in publication in 1916, with E. E. Wilson as editor and L. W. Faucett as publisher.
