About Holly Oak Journal (Holly Oak, Del.) 1889-1???
The Holly Oak Journal began publication in Holly Oak, Delaware, on February 1889. The Holly Oak Journal Company operated the monthly newspaper, which sold for 2 cents per issue and which listed its circulation at 10,000 readers. The inaugural issue predicted that the Journal “is destined someday to become one of the leading papers of the State.” The paper was dedicated to providing local news to the community of Holly Oak, a new town in the suburbs of Wilmington that the newspaper described as progressive. The paper went on to stated that “It will be the special work of the “Journal” to assist in promoting the general welfare of our city, by advocating and helping in all its mercantile, manufacturing and shipping interests.”
The Holly Oak Journal was intended to be a household paper. Although it covered both national and local news, it tended to focus on the latter. For example, one issue included a history of Holly Oak, noting the community’s proximity to railroad lines, its superior drainage, and its central business district. The column “Local Chips” was devoted to the activities of local men. The Journal also provided advertising space for local businesses, most notably the Wilmington Commercial College, the predecessor of the present Goldey-Beacom College.
It is unclear when the Holly Oak Journal ceased publication, but it most likely did not last a full year. It is not listed in the 1890 edition of Ayer’s newspaper directory.
