About The Society News (Wilmington, Del.) 1883-18??

The Society News was founded in Wilmington, Delaware, on October 13, 1883. Published every Saturday by Edgar Cook, the Society News cost 50 cents and stated its purpose as to “do all the good that is possible for a paper of its kind to do.” While it addressing political concerns, the Society News remained “nonpartisan in sentiment, giving a fair hearing to all, reserving the right to oppose or condemn all.”

A column titled “Some Things Concerning our Secret Societies” included advertisements for fraternal lodges and information about organizations such as Freemasons, Odd Fellows, Order of United Workmen, and the Knights and Ladies of Honor. In addition, Society News included columns on local and national theatre, books, poetry, short fiction, fashion, and art. Later issues of the newspaper also featured sporting news such as horse racing. The December 15, 1883 issue called for the creation of a first-class trotting association in Wilmington. The newspaper paid particular attention to baseball by discussing the records and players of various teams and noting that in Louisville, Kentucky, “a first class colored team has been organized.”

It is unknown when the Society News ceased publication, but it was most likely sometime in 1884, as it is not listed in the 1885 edition of Rowell’s newspaper directory.
